John & Adeline Valenzuela Memorial for Transfer Students
This scholarship is for transferring students who maintain an overall minimum 3.0 GPA. Scholarship open to members of A.Ch.A, Hermanos Ocelotl, IDEAS, Mexican American Studies Scholars, Nuesta Gente Spanish Club, Puente Club, SHPE, Spanglish Club, Students for Social Justice, SWC Investment Club. Student must also demonstrate financial need, which is determined by data on the student’s current FAFSA or Dream Act Application.
This scholarship is awarded in memory of John Valenzuela, who gave up his dream of going to college when he had to drop out of high school to help support his widowed mother and siblings. The family migrated to the United States from Mexico in 1914 to escape the violence of the Mexican Revolution. Despite his limited formal education, John had a very successful career in retail and the wholesale foods industry. John was a very hard worker with a formidable memory who would not compromise his principles. He passed away in 2001 at the age of 91.
