Rising Scholars Dr. Llewelyn Labio Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established to support justice-impacted Southwestern College students who have been personally impacted, or involved, with the criminal justice system and in 2024 was dedicated to the memory of Dr. Llewelyn Labio. This may include, but is not limited to: individuals who have been incarcerated or in detention, those with arrests/convictions without incarceration, those under parole supervision, those on probation, individuals with immediate family members who are directly impacted by the justice system. Additional essay will be required.
Dr. Llewelyn Labio was a staunch advocate for justice-impacted populations and single mothers pursuing higher education. As a formerly incarcerated single mother who overcame tremendous barriers during her pursuit of higher education, Dr. Labio was committed to ensuring students felt welcomed and supported along their academic journey.
Following her incarceration, at the age of 35, Dr. Labio began her educational career at Southwestern College where she earned her Associate’s Degree for Transfer in Communication. She matriculated to San Diego State University where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication, minoring in Leadership Studies, and continued on to receive a Master’s Degree in Communication Studies. Following her graduate program, she was successfully admitted to the University of San Diego where she completed her PhD in Leadership Studies on May 19, 2024.
Dr. Labio was a cherished friend, devoted family member, and an amazing mother. Her two children were the light of her life, and she was always there to support them with anything and everything. She spent her days shuffling the kids to and from practice, games, performances, and play dates as well as instilling in them a passion for education and success. She was always there to support and guide them with love and wisdom.
On June 21, 2024, the beloved Dr. Llewelyn Labio passed away due to complications during a routine heart surgery. She made significant contributions to our community that will leave a lasting impact. Southwestern College celebrates a life well-lived and proudly presents this scholarship in her honor.
